The Local Legacy of the Samuel Barnett Family

Samuel Barnett, railroad Commissioner of Georgia and lawyer, was born in Washington, Georgia March 6, 1824.

This line of the Barnett family is of Scotch-Irish descent, and ancestors came to Newark, New Jersey in the early 17th century, finally settling in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina.

His father, Samuel Jack Barnett, born in 1775, married Elizabeth Wingfield Willis in 1822 in Wilkes County. She was born in 1791 and said to be a refined lady. Elizabeth's ancestors came from Suffolk County, England to Virginia. Her father, Thomas Wingfield was an early Mary Willis Librarysettler of Wilkes County in 1784. She was the widow of Thomas Willis and the mother of Dr. Francis T. Willis. Dr. Willis was the donor and founder of the Mary Willis Library in Washington, Georgia endowed by him and named after his daughter Mary Willis. The library was the first free public library in the state of Georgia.

Samuel Barnett's grandfather, William Barnett, born 1747, was one of "Marion 's Men" of South Carolina during the American Revolution. His grandmother, Jean Jack born 1750, was a sister of James Jack who volunteered and carried on horseback from Charlotte, North Carolina to congress in Philadelphia, the famous Mecklenburg Declaration of Independence. Barnett Home in 1830They married in 1772 in North Carolina and in 1783, William and Jean Barnett moved toWilkes County, which was known as "the Whigs hornet nest". William and Jean lived at "Old Smyrna" and William was the sheriff of Wilkes Co., Georgia in 1788. William 's parents were John and Ann Spratt Barnett. Ann was the first white person born in the Yadkin Valley of North Carolina in 1719.

Mr. Samuel Barnett graduated with first honor from the South Carolina College in Isaiah Tucker IrvinColumbia in 1843, and taught school in Washington, Georgia until 1847, marrying Elizabeth A. Stone in 1846. Judge Garnett Andrews admitted him to law in 1847, and his partner was Isaiah Tucker Irvin. He was president of the Washington Bank, and Director of the Georgia Railroad with the town Historical Museum Todayof Barnett on the Georgia Railroad being named for him. Mr. Barnett was also a trustee at the University of Georgia and commissioner with Bleckley, Starnes and Hull. They were commissioned to prepare a freedman's code of Georgia. He was a varied, prolific, learned and strong writer and was for a while; editor of the Augusta Samuel Barnett died March 23, 1896 and is buried at Resthaven Cemetery in Washington, Georgia. His home, at 308 E. Robert Toombs Ave in Washington is now The Washington Historical Museum.
